Introduction to Standard Test for Business Japanese (STBJ)

The Standard Test for Business Japanese (STBJ) is a new type of practical test developed for foreign employees working in Japanese companies or Japanese language learners who want to work in Japanese companies, which tests the candidate's Japanese language ability and the degree of related business and cultural knowledge necessary, so as to evaluate his practical ability in corporate activities. Therefore, this test can be used as a reference standard for the employment of employees in Japanese enterprises and the admission of foreign students in Japanese universities.

The content of STBJ

1. The ability to use knowledge of vocabulary and expression required in enterprise work appropriately

2. The ability to understand the true intentions of various expressions used by Japanese in business activities

3. The ability to express proper respect that is indispensable in business occasions

4. The ability to understand and appropriately respond the unique euphemism of the Japanese

5. Mastery of the indispensable business practices in Japanese business activities

Ability test (analogy)

No language test can measure all aspects of language activity. For example, the objective test that determines most abilities of candidates cannot examine the “discourse ability” and “description ability.” And, because of the large number of candidates, it is also difficult to carry out the subjective test such as “actual conversation” or “writing articles.” Therefore, the test of this type of “message-sending ability” is carried out by analogy.

In the test, the “speech ability question” of Question 1 is used to determine the “speech ability” of the candidates by letting them choose the most appropriate statement under certain conditions from four options. If the candidates can answer the question correctly, they can be considered as “making proper expressions in practical communication.” The same applies to the test of “description ability”, where candidates with correct answers can be identified as having not only “reading ability” but also “description ability.”

In this way, in the standard business Japanese test, the ability that cannot be directly evaluated is examined by analogy.

Candidates

1. College students who want to engage in business activities related to Japan

2. Those who want to work for Japanese companies

3. Employees who have already worked in Japanese companies

4. Enterprise personnel who have business contacts with Japanese enterprises

5. Those who want to study in Japan
