About the School

The School of Foreign Languages, Dalian University of Technology was established soon after the University was founded. It started as the Russian and Research Group responsible for teaching Russian to students of various majors in the University. In 1985, the Department of Foreign Languages was founded and began to offer undergraduate programs in English. In 2001, the Department started to offer undergraduate programs in Japanese and earned the right to confer master’s degrees in the secondary discipline of Foreign Linguistics and Applied Linguistics. In 2003, it obtained the right to confer master’s degrees in the secondary discipline of EnglishLanguage and Literatureand was renamed as the School of Foreign Languages. In 2010, the School earned the right to confer master’s degrees in the primary discipline of Foreign Languages and Literature with three master’s programs in the secondary disciplines, including Foreign Linguistics and Applied Linguistics, English Language and Literature and Japanese Language and Literature; and in the same year, the School got the right to confer master’s degrees in Translation and Interpreting. In 2012, it started to offer undergraduate programs in Translation and Interpreting. In 2013, it began to offer undergraduate programs in Russian.

The School consists of eight departments, namely, the English Department, Japanese Department, Russian Department, Department of Translation and Interpreting, Department of Graduate Studies, Department of Non-English-Major Graduates, Department of College English (I)and Department of College English (II). It has 13 research institutes, namely, the Institute of Classics Translation, the Institute of European and American Literature Studies, the Institute of Language and Cognition, the Institute of English Linguistics, the Institute of Japanese Studies, the Institute of Japanese Education, CALL, the Center for Pragmatics Studies, the Research Center for Foreign Language Education, the Research Center for the Development of Foreign Language Teachers, the Center for Canadian Studies, the Center for Asia-Pacific and the Global Strategy and Center for Intercultural Communication between China and Belarus. Also, the School has a Practice Center for Foreign Language Education (Center for Extracurricular Activities) and the Center for CET-4 and CET-6. The School has also published the academic periodical,Foreign Language Education and Researchand the academic forum, Dalian Forum.

The School’s teaching and research team is made up of qualified teachers from home and abroad. Among its 116 faculty and staff, 108 are teaching staff, including 17 professors, 53 associate professors and 38 lecturers. It also has 16 guest professors and 30 foreign teachers. Since its founding in 2003, the School has 30-odd translated works and 100-odd textbooks published; its teachers have published 120-odd academic papers in SSCI, EI or CSSCI journals. Now the School is responsible for four research projects supported by the National Social Science Fund, eight Humanities and Social Sciences Research Projects supported by the Ministry of Education and three National Education Sciences Planning Projects on Foreign Language Education. Five fields stand out: literature and philosophy, classics translation, pragmatic and discourse analysis, language and cognition and international studies. Keeping a close academic connection with universities and institutes in the U.S., the U.K., Canada, Australia and Japan, the School has established joint research programs with them, which extends and deepens its cooperation and communication with the academic world outside China and keeps us connected with the latest international academic development.

In order to meet the requirement globalization and to adhere to the Dalian University of Technology’s goal of building up an internationally preeminent and research-oriented university, the School of Foreign Languages aims at a comprehensive development led by discipline development, takes up the mission of carrying out research on foreign languages, literature and culture as well as cultivating qualified personnel in foreign languages, literature and culture, and spares no efforts to win a high reputation for its teaching and research.
